After an incredible inaugural season, getting third place at the state championship tournament, and only losing one regular season game, the Valley Valkyries Girl’s Rugby team is very excited for the 2019/2020 season.

Losing nine seniors from the previous season and gaining 11 new players, their team is on the younger side compared to previous years, but the girls are not going to let that affect their success this season.

“This year we are trying to open up and play a much wider game and a much more fluid game so there’s not a lot of pressure on one person,” said head coach, Kyle Larson, “whereas last year we were so focussed on positions and individual roles.”

According to Coach Larson, the Valley Valkyries are not as nervous this year as they were last year because they just came off of such a successful season. This year however, they are starting at the varsity level so they have a lot of tougher competition ahead of them.

“I am most excited to work with the new girls, since we have a lot of new recruits this season.” said Team Captain Michelle Marshall, “It is definitely difficult to start from scratch again, but I am excited to see how we work together.” This is Marshall’s second year with the Valley Valkyries and she is one of the only two seniors.

Last weekend in the Summit Sevens tournament the Valley Valkyries, fell to two tough teams, Monarch and Utah Wasatch, but had a very strong win over Fort Collins.

“We only have a couple of home games, but we really would love it if there was a good turn out, especially in the student section!” Marshall said. They have a home tournament next Saturday, September 21. The tournament lasts all day and the game times for our Valley Valkyries are still to be determined. The ladies also have a homecoming game scheduled for Wednesday September 25th at Stubler Memorial Field at 6:30. Our rugby girls would love to see you there.
