An Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile Movie Hits Big on Netflix

For receiving the death penalty several years ago, Ted Bundy has had quite the year.

The new film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is officially available to watch on Netflix. The movie tells the story of the notorious serial killer from the 1970s. Bundy admitted to at least 36 killings across several western states including Colorado. He was held in both the Garfield County Jail in Glenwood Springs as well as the Pitkin County Jail in Aspen. Bundy escaped twice from the Pitkin County Jail and was later captured after killing more women in Florida. Bundy was sentenced to be executed in the electric chair in 1989.

In the movie, the role of Ted Bundy is played by the crowd’s favorite, Zac Efron. Although Bundy was not a good man, the movie shows the kinder and gentler side of the serial killer. Efron has the perfect face to embody the “hotness” that drew women towards him and led to him kidnapping, raping, and mutilating at least 30 women. The director of the movie, Joe Berlinger chose to tell Bundy’s story through the eyes of Elizabeth Kendall (Lily Collins), who was a single mother whom he loved and lived with. We see Bundy, as Kendall saw him and how her view changed over time.

The film does a good job of telling the story, but in a way makes Bundy seem like too much of a “good guy”. For a good portion of the movie, I really questioned if Bundy did do anything wrong because of how he refused to admit it was him. He made himself seem so innocent until he started escaping from jail and Kendall started to believe that he was the rapist that everyone was saying he was. Overall I have heard mixed emotions about the film, some saying that the film portrayed the true story really well and others saying that they wish they would’ve seen the “bad side” of Ted Bundy rather than his innocent side.

With both views at hand, I encourage you to go watch Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile on Netflix and decide for yourself how you like the movie!
