Lady demons off to solid start

The women’s soccer team is off to a strong start at the beginning of the 2019 season.  The Demons beat Arvada West 2-0 last Saturday April 6th, improving their overall record to a 4-2.  The first goal came from an assist by Zoe Harbour to Tatum Lilly and the second goal was assisted by Ella Johnson to Maya Elis.  The Demons two losses were against Montrose, losing 1-0 in their second game of the season, and to Steamboat 4-1 last Thursday, April 4th.  

Senior Sarah Helm states, “The team needs to work on playing at a quicker tempo, for example when someone makes a run through the defense, we need to recognize it earlier and play the through ball faster.  Overall fitness, and defensive shape could use some work as well”. Although the demons have lost many seniors, the young team is working hard and looking forward to make another amazing playoff run this season.

Although Helm believes the team need work she explains, “I believe we have started the season pretty well.  We have not been as consistent as we would have liked at this point in the season, but the win against Arvada boosted our confidence.”.  Helm adds, “Playing Battle Mountain away this upcoming weekend will show how tough and talented our team really is.”.

In the 2018 season, the demons made it to the semi – finals in the 2018 playoffs.  Their season ended when they lost to Valor Christian 2-1. 2018 Senior Eryn Peterson, Glenwood’s 2018 leading scorer has graduated leaving a big void in the 2019 team.  The youngsters looks to fill that void such as players like, sophomore Tatum Lily, Freshman Ella Johnson, and Junior Summer McSwain.

Lily leads the team with 5 goals in only 6 games, Seniors Malia Baltzer and Sarah Helm both recorded 3 goals.  Junior Celia Scruton leads the team in assists with 3 in only 3 games. The demons hope to improve their overall record to 5-2 and their league record to 4-1 this Thursday, April 11th with a win against their rival, Rifle.
