Oscars 2019 Review

With the Oscars approaching in February of 2019, the question being asked is “Will the award show be the same without a host?”, as Kevin Hart recently resigned from hosting. He has always said that it was his dream to host the Academy Awards, but now that he was invited to host he has stepped down because of an issue on Twitter from several years ago.

Hart announced, “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars”, in early January on Twitter. He later explained that he was stepping down because of the controversy due to some homophobic tweets that were made by Hart in 2011. Among many tweets that have now been deleted Hart said, “Yo if my son comes home & tries 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 breaks it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.’ “ This caused more of an uproar now than it did when the tweets were posted.

When the Academy came upon the posts after inviting Hart to host the Oscars in February. Before Kevin stepped down from hosting, he was asked by his fans and many LGBTQ activists to apologize for the tweets but he claimed that he had already addressed his statements and wanted to move on from his past and work on being a new and better person.

Kevin Hart agrees that he should not have made those offensive comments, and claims that he would not repeat anything that he posted. Hart feels that the Oscars should be bringing everyone in the acting community together and he does not want the controversy to distract from the awards and “tear” the community apart.

In the past, famous comedians like Ellen Degeneres, Jimmy Kimmel, and Billy Crystal have been the hosts for the annual Oscars, but as of right now there is not a host for the awards. The Academy may or may not end up choosing one by the time February 24th comes.

Meanwhile, the nominations for the Awards were just recently released on January 22. There is a very wide range of awards that are given out, such as, Best Documentary, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Most Original Song, Producing, Directing, and so much more. Many of the new and popular movies (and actors/actresses in the films) have been nominated in several different categories, including “A Star is Born”, “Bohemian Rapsody”, “Mary Poppins Returns”, “The Favourite”, and several other films from the past year.
